How To Get Started with Smart Home Automation

There’s no doubt that smart home automation systems can make life unimaginably easy. Imagine coming to a home that’s already at the optimal temperature, the lights are switched on, and your favourite songs play at your command. Wouldn’t it be great if your fridge could look up recipes and even read them to you as you cook? What if devices could identify energy-guzzling appliances and help you save on electricity bills?

While Indians crave these technological conveniences, they wrongly believe that such conveniences are ultra-expensive and beyond the reach of the middle class. As leading home automation distributors in India, we’re here to break this myth. We work with home automation suppliers and installers, delivering world-class home automation technology at the best possible price. If you’ve ever wondered how to get started with smart home automation, read on:

Start Simple

You can control most smart home devices directly with just Wi-Fi and a corresponding app – simply buy the product, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and download the corresponding app. While this sounds easy, it is not practical to download dozens of apps.

This is where general wireless protocols like Zigbee or Z-Wave help – they communicate with a hub to consolidate and control all your smart home devices under one app. To the uninitiated, a hub refers to hardware or software that connects different devices on the home automation network and controls communication between them.

Quick Question: Does your home need a hub?

Depends. You don’t need a hub if you only have a few devices that need not communicate with one another. A lot of smart home products can communicate through your Wi-Fi. They’re easy to set up and control from a phone or a smart speaker(Alexa, Google Nest) that acts like a hub. But adding dozens of devices to the home Wi-Fi can slow down the network and drain device batteries.

Hubs are necessary for devices that work on Zigbee, Z-Wave, or other protocols, rather than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. While devices need a specific hub to come with their proprietary hub, they cannot integrate with other smart home products, thereby affecting communication between them. A smart home hub can combine different devices in a centralized location. Thus, if a smoke detector( using a proprietary hub) senses smoke, it can communicate with the smart door (using another proprietary hub) to unlock the doors through a centralized hub.

Smart Speakers

You can link smart speakers to devices to turn off the lights and fan, turn up the air conditioner, etc. You could buy third-party speakers with voice assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant or smart speakers like Google Nest, Apple’s HomePod, or Amazon’s Echo. When purchasing smart home products, make sure they support the corresponding voice assistant available in your smart speaker.

You could also buy a smart display if you’d like a bit more control over things. A smart display function like a smart speaker with voice command support but also comes with a screen that allows touch control for the different products. Sometimes, you can even program your home security camera to send a video feed to the screen.

Smart Security Solutions

Smart door options range from doors with fingerprint access to voice-activated doors to even doors that can be remotely opened or locked from your phone. You can even provide temporary access to friends or relatives for a specific time. Installing them is simple – some locks come as a complete set, while others only require you to replace a single component.

Smart doorbells allow you to speak to visitors before opening the door. You can view feeds from the doorbells remotely to view who’s ringing or even talk to the visitor from anywhere in the world. Some models work with low-voltage wiring, while some are battery-operated and do not need wiring.
